Basically this is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula (NH4)2Cr2O7 and is a salt consisting of ammonium and dichromate ions. Well, some other names of ammonium dichromate include- hexavalent chromium, ammonium bichromate and ammonium pyrochromate.

The Uses-

Ammonium dichromate proved out useful in various applications. Due to its explosion properties, it is ideal to be used for the demonstration of volcanoes. They are also highly used in lithography, pyrotechnics, photography, a catalyst, mordant for dyeing pigments, leather tanning and oil purification. Further they are also used electronic as phosphor raster of television screens.


Ammonium dichromate is a known toxic. It could result in abdominal pain and vomiting. It also could cause corrosive injury to oral mucosa, esophagus and stomach. Other than that, if it is exposed to excess heat, they could explode even if packed in the container. Hence it should be kept away from the heat. It is also an irritant and could cause active irritation over skin and eyes.
