New Invention-Electro-shock for Sleep Apnea

A jolt of electricity to the base of the tongue stimulates the nerve and prevents air blockage on its way to and from the lungs.

The most common variety of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, caused when the muscles of the tongue and throat become too relaxed and block the airway. Inspire Medical Systems has created a device they are calling Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) that detects when the apnea sufferer is about to take a breath, and sends an instruction to stimulate the nerve.

While most apnea sufferers commonly wear an airway pressure device (CPAP) to compensate for the disorder, the UAS may be more comfortable for many people.
