Surgical robot with force feedback control system

At the International Robot Exhibition 2009, the Kawashima Group in the Precision and Intelligence Laboratory at Tokyo Institute of Technology presented a surgical robot with force feedback control system. The purpose of this system is to enable safer, more precise laparoscopic surgery. It’s a master-slave system consisting of multi-DOF forceps with force feedback control, and a bilateral control system that can also handle remote surgery. The manipulator on the slave side has six degrees of freedom describing the position and attitude of the end, and the forceps tip has one degree of freedom. The Kawashima Group has connected its master-slave unit to a surgical robot developed by the University of Washington Biorobotics Lab, and is testing remote operation between Japan and America.
