# How to derive a formula for muzzle velocity?

**1. How do I derive a formula for muzzle velocity using kinematics. We also had to derive one with conservation of momentum, but I already got that one.**This is a problem shooting a projectile from some height h to a distance of x and height of 0.

The knowns are distance in x and distance in y (h).

**2. Relevant equations**

KE = 1/2 mv[itex]^{2}[/itex]

PE = mgh

v=[itex]\sqrt{2gh}[/itex]

*Not sure if these apply to the kinematic derivation.

**3. The attempt at a solution**

0x xhat+h yhat=x xhat+0 yhat

This doesn’t look right…
