# Dispersion of propagating wave

It’s basically a question of mine in the subject of vibrations and waves.

We are given a function ψ(x,t) and we try to find if this function can describe a propagating wave in the direction x and if there is change in the shape of the pulse-wave.

We can check if the function can describe a propagating wave by checking if it satisfies the wave equation for one dimension and for some value of velocity.

When we are to check for change in the shape of the wave or pulse, we should find the dispersion relation. But how can we do this without the specifics of the medium?
